William Leslie, 3rd Earl of Rothes (d Flodden 09.09.1513)
m. Margaret Balfour (dau of Sir Michael Balfour of Monquhanny)
1. George Leslie, 4th Earl of Rothes (d 28.11.1558)
m1(&4). (1517, div 27.12.1520, remarried 1541) Margaret Crichton (dau of William Crichton, 3rd Lord, by Margaret, dau of King James II)
The legality of at least the first of their 'marriages' has been doubted which is why the claim to the Earldom of the second son, William Leslie, was disputed by some. Queen Mary is reported to have stepped in to resolve the dispute and to have supported the claim of Andrew (eldest son by Agnes Somerville) but this was possibly because he was a Catholic whilst William was a Protestant rather than because of the strict legality of the position. Margaret appears to have continued to be George's mistress throughout much of his marriage to Agnes Somerville and he had children by both of them during that time. We show all George and Margaret's reported children together but note that (1) at least the first two sons were probably born before George's marriage to Elizabeth Gray, (2) Elizabeth, Agnes, Beatrix and Euphemia were probably born whilst George was married to Agnes Somerville and some say that one or more of them were daughters of Agnes Somerville, (3) Janet and Helen, shown here as being by Agnes Somerville, may have been daughters of Margaret Crichton.
