Families covered: Walcot of Bitterley Court, Walcot of Croagh, Walcot of Walcot (Walcott of Walcott)
BLG1886 starts its article with the following: "The Walcots derive their descent from one of the ancient septs of Wales, and their surname from the marriage of an ancestor with the heiress of the knightly House of Walcot. They were seated at Walcot, Salop, from time immemorial .... the family is said to be of Saxon origin." The coat of arms is described as "Quarterly: 1st and 4th, arg. a chevron between three chess rooks, sa.; 2nd and 3rd, arg., on a cross flory gu., five fleur-de-lis or."

Visitation shows uncertainty at this stage showing: - this John as son of Sir Philip (with the ancestry shown above) and married to Alice, dau of David Lloyd ap Sir Griffith Vychan; and - an alternative ancestry for this John, showing him as son of John son of Thomas (a 1405-6) son of Sir John (a 1382-3) and showing him as married to Matilda Cornwall. We (provisonally) follow BLG1886 which appears to combine these views. |

Visitation (Shropshire) shows their son Charles as the elder son and as of Walcot (as was his son Sir Charles) with Humphrey as of London (but his son Humphrey also of Walcot). BLG1886 shows Humphrey as the elder son and 'of Walcot' (and follows his line) with Charles 'of Builth' and ancestor of Walcot of Winkton (with no further information on this line). Visitation (London, mentioned below) shows Humfry as 'of Walcot Esq. and of London'. TCP (Bristol) describes Charles, father of the 1st Earl's wife, as "of Walcott". We presume that Charles was the elder and that Humphrey retained an interest in the area sufficient to enable him to be described also as 'of Walcot'.
