Families covered: Paulet of Crondall, Paulet of Gotehurst, Paulet of Hinton St. George, Paulet of Nunney, Paulet of Paulet
(1) This family's name is often spelled 'Powlett' and sometimes as 'Paulett', 'Pawlet', 'Pawlett', 'Poulett', or 'Powlet'. We have kept to 'Paulet' but others do not. (2) Collins reports that the following Hercules "came into England with Jeffery Plantaginet, Earl of Anjou, third son of King Henry II". For some years we showed the under-mentioned William (d 1242) as possibly an illegitimate son of Earl Jeffery (Geoffrey) but, when challenged on this by a site visitor (AA, 29.09.24), we could not validate that connection. Thanks to AA for bringing that apparent error to our attention. |

'TUDOR' shows Sir George as married thrice, to Jane Lark (mother of William) then to Barbara Hampden (mother of Hampden, Giles, Catherine, etc.) then to Elizabeth Windsor (mother of Sir George). That site then shows son William as having married Elizabeth Smith, daugher of Henry Smith by the same Barbara Hampden. Visitation (Buckinghamshire, 1634, Hampden of Hampden) shows his son William as married to Anne, daughter of Edmund Smith (son of Sir John) by Barbara Hampden (her only marriage), by whom he was father of William and Sir Hampden. Giving precedence to the Visitation record, we combine these as shown below. However, the dates for his first wife (who is reported to have died in childbirth) make it look VERY doubtful that this is correct. We will revisit this in due course. | |||||||||||||||
