Families covered: Wood of Copmanthorpe, Wood of Hollin Close Hall, Wood of Swinsley, Wood of Till, Wood of York

We are cautious about approximating dates but, given that no dates were given by Foster for any of the early generations of this family, it seems sensible to try to identify roughly the period in which the following Ambrose probably lived. He was 9 generations before the John Wood of Copmanthorpe who was reported to have been born in 1586. It is therefore not unlikely that Ambrose was born near the beginning of the 14th century. It is noted that a number of interesting connections are shown between this and other documented families. However, some appear suspicious, not least because the generations appear be shown inconsistently here with what is known of those other families.

  A. Robert Wood
Walker shows this Robert as Robert of Lambley & Woodborough, Nottinghamshire, who married Margaret, dau of Sir Edmond (sb Edward) Mountague, Lord Chief Justice, and was father of (of inter alia) John who married Katherine Huson. We show the Robert who married Margaret Mountague on Wood07 where, following Visitation (Nottinghamshire), he is shown as son of Robert (by Elizabeth Story), son of Henry (son of Jane Strelly), and father of John of Lamley (m. Catherin Hewsonn). Clearly, either Walker or the Nottinghamshire Visitation is wrong. Provisionally, we follow the latter. The following are those of Robert's children reported by Walker who do not appear in the Nottinghamshire Visitation as son of 'the other' Robert.
