(1) 'A System of Heraldry' (Alexander Ninsbet, vol 1, 1816, p354) reports that the arms of Paterson generally are "argent, three pelicans feeding their young or, in nests vert" and reports that the Patersons "designed of Dalkeith, of old, carried the same with a chief azure, charged with three mullets argent".
(2) 'A System of Heraldry' (p354) identifies the arms of Sir Hugh Paterson of Bannockburn as "argent. three pelicans vulned gules. on a chief embattled azure, as many mullets of the field".
