Families covered: Hamilton of Colquhot, Hamilton of Macnairstoun, Hamilton of Sanquhar, Hamilton of Sorne

(1) Arguably the best known member of this branch of Hamiltons was the Sir William who was Senator of the College of Justice & Lord High Treasurer of Scotland, and apparently also Lord Provost of Edinburgh. He is widely reported as having been the William Hamilton who was 2nd son of Alexander Hamilton of Cambuskeith. For example, Anderson (p 254 & p382) does so, in each case identifying him as 'of Macknairstoun (or Maknaristoun)' before being of Sorne & Sanquar. However, 'HamiltonHistory' identifies Sir William's parentage very differently, as shown below. Nevertheless, 'HamiltonHistory' does accept that the families were closely connected (mentioning that a settlement "indicates that the connection of the two families was close", p218) but reports (also p218) that "evidence of the actual connection between the two families has not been discovered". We have seen, in a web site on Sorn Castle, the suggestion that William Hamilton of Sorn was a younger son of the Udston line but that may well be a confusion between different Sorns.
(2) 'HamiltonHistory' reports that "The first of Macnairiston to appear in records is" ...
Alexander Hamilton of McNaristoun father of Patrick, possibly also of ...
1. John Hamilton of McNairiston (a 1501, 1521)
'HamiltonHistory' reports that John was "probably the John Hamilton who was Provost of Edinburgh 1517/18" but he does not appear as such in Wikipedia.
m1. Margaret Farquhar
  A. (Sir) William Hamilton of Macnairstoun (Mackneirstom), later of Sorne & Sanquhar, Provost of Edinburgh (d before 25.03.1560/1, Senator of the College of Justice)
See the note above. Anderson suggests that Sir William was (inter alia) Lord High Treasurer of Scotland but 'HamiltonHistory' reports that "though frequently so styled, he never seems to have been Treasurer of Scotland, nor even to have been knighted".
  m. (by 1518) Katherine Kennedy (a 05.1538, dau of David Kennedy, 1st Earl of Cassillis, widow of Quintin Mure of Ard)
'HamiltonHistory' (p776) reports that William & Katherine had four daughters only (reported below) whilst William's son William was "a natural son". However, 'HamiltonHistory' ('Colquott', p254) also reports that Sir William, brother of Thomas, had "six lawful brothers and one natural brother" but Thomas is not named.'AndersonMemoirs' (Supplement, p474) mentions 4 sons for Sir William other than his heir, William, being Bernard, George, William and Patrick. Provisionaly, we presume that the brothers were all 'natural' but may have been legitimated though a record of such legitimation is mentioned only for William.

The following comes from 'HamiltonHistory' ('Colquott', p254+) with some support from 'AndersonMemoirs' ('Colquhot', p266+) & HJHeraldry (Hamilton, 'Colquhot', p122+). Anderson reports that "Nisbet states that the predecessor of this family was a brother of Sir William Hamilton of Sorne. The first that I have met with was John Hamilton". 'HamiltonHistory' shows this Thomas as his father and (probably) brother of Sir William. 'HamiltonHistory' also reports that Thomas's wife in 1542 was Margaret Law (whose previous husband was alive in 1523) and then mentions that his son John "was appointed macer in room of his deceased father 31 May 1544". Provisionally, we presume that John was by an earlier wife.

Isabel is not mentioned by either 'HamiltonHistory' or Anderson but she is shown in both TCP ('Sempill', p623) & TSP ('Sempill', p543) as dau of William Hamilton of Sanquhar. The dates make that unlikely so we show her as of this generation, as William's sister rather than his daughter.
