Families covered: Mitton (Mutton) of Mitton, Mitton (Mytton) of Shrewsbury, Mytton of Weston
[This page was split into 2 on 10.01.06, with part going into Mytton2, to permit expansion.]
BLG1952 and Commoners report that the family "is presumed to have taken its surname from the village of Mitton", near Shrewsbury. Visitation spells the family name as Mitton but BLG1952 & BLG1886 use Mytton whilst Commoners starts with Mutton before using Mitton then Mytton. We follow Commoners for the first few generations (Mutton) and then Visitation (Mitton) until the first generation of the pedigree reported by BLG1952 and thereafter use the Mytton spelling, but may not be consistent with this throughout the database.

Commoners shows John as married only once, to Joan Middlemore who is therefore implied to have been mother of his son John (Commoners does not mention his daughters). However, Visitation shows also his marriage to Anne Swinnerton, identifying her as mother of John's children. We follow Visitation, presuming Joan to be John's second wife, which refers to monumental effigies of John and his wives in Weston Church. This is supported by the Swynnerton source which identifies Anne as mother of William & John.
