Robert de Gernon of Merdley, etc (a 1066, 1086)
Robert, who came to England at the time of the Conquest from the Gernon-Montfichet region in Normandy, is sometimes identified as father of William de Montfichet but this seems unlikely as such a possible connection is not mentioned by Collins. Perhaps there were 2 different people called Robert who came to England from the same region at about the same time. They may have been related. This Robert obtained lands in Herefordshire whereas William de Montfichet obtained (whether by inheritance, possibly from a father called Robert, or otherwise is not known) Stanstead in Essex.

(A) | Roger de Gernon of Grimston Hall (in Trimley St. Martin, Suffolk) (d 1324)
m. _ Potton (dau/heir of John Potton of Cavendish)
Collins clearly identifies this Roger as father of Sir John de Cavendish, the Lord Chief Justice, ancestor of the extant Dukes of Devonshire, plus Roger (m. Alice Stratton), Mayor Stephen & Richard. However, BP1934 (Devonshire) implies that there is doubt on this. Roger is the first mentioned by Visitation (Suffolk, 1561, Gernon alias Cavendish of Grimston Hall) which shows his son John as John Gernon alias Cavendish of Grimston Hall, father of Roger (m. Alice Stratton). To confuse matters further, Visitation (Sussex, 1530+1633-4) shows Roger (m. Alice Stratton) as brother of William of London (ancestor of Cavendish of Suffolk) and son of Sir William of Cavendish, son of Sir William son of Justice Sir John Cavendish of Cavendish. Provisionally, we follow Visitation (Suffolk) but may revise this in due course.
(i) | John Gernon alias Cavendish of Grimston Hall
m. Christian | |||||||||||||||
Visitation (Suffolk) mentions that there were other children of this generation. Provisionally we presume that Collins was right to suggest that they included:

(iii) | Richard de Cavendish
ii. | Roger de Gernon (a 1170, to Ireland) ancestor of Gernons and Garlands in Ireland
