Andrew Gray of Cluny (a 1512)
'The Scottish Antiquary' mentions that Sir Robert Gordon's 'History of Sutherland' identifies the John (d 1586) as son, by 1st wife, of Andrew ("the slayer of the Constable of Dundee"), 2nd son of Andrew, only son of Sir Patrick the Master of Gray, by his 2nd wife, Elizabeth Stewart, dau of John, Earl of Athol. However, this appears to be confusion with the Andrew of Muirtown who was ancestor of the later Lords Gray. Thanks to CV (22.04.14) for advising us that "Skibo - Its Lairds and History", by Peter Gray (1906), reports that "John Gray of Culmaly, and Skibo, and Sordell, first of Skibo, and great-great-grandson of Lord Gray, was the legitimated son of Sir William Gray, a kirk celibate, and thus never married, but as a salvo of the offspring letters of legitimation were granted 5th June 1539". That supports what we show, which follows TSP (Gray) that says that Andrew "is said to be the ancestor of the Grays of Skibo" and that he "had several sons" but names only the following Alexander, although we are a little concerned that there has been more confusion with the Alexander who is shown as son of Andrew of Muirtown.
