Families covered: Ernle of Cackham (Cookham), Erneley of Cannings, Erneley of Erneley (Ernle of Ernle)

(1) According to Commoners, "This family derives its name from the village of Earnley, or Ernle, in Sussex, so called from the Saxon words "Earn" and "Lege", the place or habitation of eagles".
(2) There are some significant differences between the pedigrees found for this family. Commoners is partially but not wholly consistent with the Visitations but BLG1952 places certain members of the family differently. We follow BLG1952 on the presumption that its information was based on further research but first show (in smaller font in italics) how Visitation (Sussex) and Commoners report the ancestry.
