As reported on Clinton01, there is some confusion on the early Tancreville chamberlains to the Dukes of Normandy and Norman Kings of England. BEB1841 starts with the following John who is described as kinsman of the William, Count of Tankerville, who "came into England with the Conqueror; but returned to the dukedom".
John de Tankerville (chamberlain to King Henry I who r. 1100-1135)
Visitation (Oxfordshire) starts with the following Richard, shown by BEB1841 as son of John, describing him as "Richardus Camerarius sive Chamberlaine de Tanquervile". We suggest that some scepticism should be shown to the first few generations shown here.
1. Richard Chamberlayne (chamberlain to King Stephen who r. 1135-1154)
  A. William Chamberlayne of North Riston (chamberlain to King Henry II who r. 1154-1189)
  m. _ Clifton
  i. Robert Chamberlayne

  m. Jane Mortein (dau of Sir John Mortein by Johanna, dau of Richard Ekeney of Ekney)
  (i) Sir Richard Chamberlayne
  m. Jane Reynes (dau of Sir John Reynes of Clifton Reynes)
  (a) Richard Chamberlaine of Sherborne - continued below
  m. Margaret Lovayne (dau of Nicholas Lovayne)
  (b) John Chamberlayne of Hopton
  m. Alice Bensted
  (c) Thomas Chamberlayne of Denford
  m. Katherine Kingston
  ((1)) Thomas Chamberlaine
  m. Isabella
Visitation, which shows no descendants for the above John of Hopton (m. Alice Bensted) continues this line showing Thomas & Isabella's son John (m. _ Elton) father of John (m. Agnes Reynes) father of:
(1) William (m. Clemence, dau of Humphrey Kingston of Middleton-in-le-Parke) father of Mathew & Cecilia.
(2) Willus in London (m. Elizabeth Fleming of Dartmout) father of Thomas (m. Anna Vanderzeene), Elizabeth, Ann & Margaret.
However, as kindly brought to our attention by a contributor (DS, 18.07.07), much of this looks remarkably similar to the descent from Thomas (m. _ Knifton) shown on Chamberlain02 as the son of John of Hopton (by Alice Bensted). We provisionally follow BEB1841 which provides that descent.
  (d) Edward Chamberlayne
  (2) Mabel (Amabilia) Chamberlayne presumed of this family, possibly of this generation
  m. Ralph Reynes of Clifton, etc. (d before 1310)

  m. (by 1504) Cecilia Verney (dau of John Verney of Penley)
  a. Sir Leonard Chamberlaine of Coates & Sherborne (Shirburn & Woodstock) (d 1561)
Visitation shows just 1 wife for Leonard, Dorothy Newdigate, and shows her as mother of all of his children. HoP shows 4 wives and reports that Dorothy was mother of at least George who was the 2nd son. We presume that Francis was the elder son.

Visitation (Warwickshire, 1619, Chamberlaine) provides the following information about the Chamberlaines of Astley.
  (1) Richard (probably not Edward) Chamberlaine of Astley (b c09.1548)
www.historyofparliamentonline.org mentions just one child of Edward, Richard. Visitation (Warwickshire) names him Edward who married "filia Harecourt". BLG1886 (Harcourt of Stanton Harcourt) shows the daughter of what seems like the right generation as having married Richard C. of A.
