BIFR1976 reporst that "This family is of Welsh origin and is said to be connected with the tribe of Cilmin Troed-du (the fourth of the fifteen noble tribes of N Wales ...). ... In England the earliest record of the name of Gillman in its early form Gilmyn (was in) 1261. In 15th and 16th cents the Gillman families resided principally in Norfolk, Essex and Surrey."
