Families covered: Dod of Broxton, Dod (Dodd) of Edge

The name of this family is often spelt "Dodd". Ormoerod shows the first 2 generations as Dot. The Visitations vary between "Dod", "Dodd" and "Dodde". On this page at least, we keep to the single "d" at the end in deference to the use shown by the family in BLG1886.
Cadwgan Dod of Dod, Cheshire (a temp Henry II who r. 1154-1189)
1. Hova Dod
  m. ?? (dau/heir of the lord of Edge)
  A. Kenric Dod of Edge, Cheshire (a temp Henry III who r. 1216-1272)
Visitation (1580) confuses the issue somewhat by showing Kenric, son of Hova, (presumably this Kenric, shown as married to _ Williamson of Shropshire) as father of Steven (father of Davy who m. dau of Massy of Coddington), missing out many generations. The intervening generations come from Visitation (1613).
  i. Cadwgan Dod of Edge
Commoners jumps 2 generations to Roger.

  m. Johanna Warren (dau/heir of John Warren of Ightfield)
  (B) John Dod or Dodd of (Smith's Pentry in) Broxton (a 1369)
Visitation (Cheshire, 1613, Dod of Edge) identifies this John as of Broxton als (alias) "smith pentrys". Visitation (Cheshire, 1613, Dod of Smithes Pentrey or Smithfield in Broxton) starts with John "2d sonne of Kendricke Dodd of Edge" but the date given for him and his wife (1369) supports the view that he was of this generation.
  m. Margery le Bird (a 1369, dau of Hugo le Bird, m2. William de Bickerton)
(C)+ other issue - Kendrick of Edge, Hugo
  ii. Stephen Dod of Broxton
Commoners identifies Stephen as "ancestor of the Dods of Bronton, whose line terminated in an heiress, the wife of Edward Tannat". It looks as though "Dods of Bronton" should read "the Dods of Broxton". Visitation shows the progenitor of one set of Dods of Broxton as John above but this is clearly the Stephen, son of Kenric of Edge, show in Ormerod (Cheshire, vol 2, p370, 'Dod of Broxton') which provides the following.
  a. John Dod of Broxton

Main source(s): Visitation (Cheshire, 1613, 'Dod of Edge'), Ormerod (Cheshire, vol 2 (1819), 'Dod of Edge', p374) with a little support for the upper section from Commoners (vol I, 'Dod of Colverley'), a little support mainly for the lower section from Visitation (Cheshire, 1580, 'Dodd of Edge'), and input as reported above
