Families covered: Caldecote of Caldecote (Calcott of Calcott, Cheshire), Calcott of Preston Mountford, Caldecott of Rugby

(1) There are places called 'Caldecott' in Cheshire, Oxfordshire & Rutland, 'Caldecote' in Hertfordshire & Warwickshire, 'Caldicot' in Monmouthshire, and 'Calcott' in Shropshire. As spelling was rarely important until the mid 19th century, these may all have a common root - but they may not, we do not know. Similarly, there are families named Caldecott, Caldecote, Caldicot, Calcott which may or may not be connected with each other and it would be wrong to think that Caldecotts came only from a Caldecott, Caldecotes from a Caldecote, etc.. To confuse things further, it appears that, for several of the familes (however their name came to be spelt later on and wherever they came from), 'Calcott' was used for at least a while in early generations. However, the sources used for this page, supported by coats of arms, identify that the following families were indeed connected. Some other probably-unconnected families are shown on Caldecott2.
(2) The family of the following section had the following coat of arms: "Argent, a fesse Azure, fretted Or, between three cinquefoils Gules". BLG1858, which sources the lower section below, reports that the Cheshire family "were means lords" of Calcot or Caldecote temp William the Conqueror.

BLG1858 reports that connected to the above family (of Cheshire) was Thomas, shown below as m. Isabel Caldecote, heiress of Barrow & Whitwell, and then showing them as the parents of the Thomas who m. Abigail Huggeford (only wife shown). Commoners starts with the Thomas who m. Abigail Huggeford, having identified him as descended from Thomas Calcott of Abingdon, but also shows his first wife, Agnes House (sic). However, there is confusion as to his ancestry. Visitation (Berkshire) shows no arms for the family whilst Visitation (Rutland, 1620, 'Calcott') shows quartered aarms with the Calcott quarter being "Argent, three bends sable" with the Harleian editor noting "over them was written Caldecott of Ketton but whether this be true or no qu'ry". The Berkshire & Rutland Visitations show the following which is supported by Nichols.
