Families covered: Button (Bytton) of Bitton
| (1) This page was originally launched on 18.09.06 using Visitation (Wiltshire) & BEB1841 (possibly also TCB though that may have come later) with a note (from BEB1841) that the family descended from Sir Walter de Button (a 1227). On 04.04.20, Button2 was launched using an article in 'Herald & Genealogist' by Rev. H.T. Ellacombe, starting with Adam D'Amneville of Bitton (a temp Henry II who r. 1154-1189). There was no connection between the 2 families. On 20.09.26, both pages were reviewed using Berry's CountyGen which starts with Sir Walter de Button (d 1227-8) and then shows overlap between the families but with contradictions, not least that there is no Sir Walter de Button (a c1227) in Ellacombe's pedigree. (2) The 2 pages were redone on 20.09.26 in an attempt to pull together all the data whilst identifying the contradictions. What had been on Button2 has been moved to the middle section below. What had previously been the lower section of this page, added to this page on 24.10.11 using Visitation (Bedfordshire), has been moved to the lower section of the new Button3. A new lower section has been provided below to link to (the redone) Button2 and a new line provided by Berry on Button3. |

| a. | Sir John Button (a 1380?) - see alternative ancestry below | ||||||||||||||
| Berry shows this John as father of the John who married Havisia de Furneaux. Following Ellacombe, we show this John below with an alternative ancestry. Note that, whilst it is not certain, it appears likely that the above omits a generation. | |||||||||||||||
| m. Joane Greenvil | |||||||||||||||

| i. | William de Button | ||||||||||||||
| ii. | Sir Adam de Button (d 1299) | ||||||||||||||
| a. | Sir John de Button (a 1300) - see alternative ancestry above | ||||||||||||||
| Note that Ellacombe, who provides the above descent, reports that John was "summoned against the Scots 1300" but Berry suggests that Sir John was living 4 Richard II (a 1380). We support Ellacomb because the dates appear to be more consistent, not least with those shown for the Furneaux faimly. | |||||||||||||||
| m. Joane Greenvil not named by Ellacombe | |||||||||||||||
| (1) | John de Button | ||||||||||||||
| m. Havisia Furneaux (dau of Sir Matthew Furneaux or Furneux) | |||||||||||||||
| Ellacombe shows John & Havisia as parents of Matthew, whose line is followed, and 3 unnamed daughters, wives of Hampton, Strode & Basset. Those daughters are named, with their spouses and some descendants, on 'Herald & Genealogist' (vol 4, p437). Berry shows Matthew, Beatrix & Maude in the next generation. The following is supported by CTG (vol 1, 'Descendants of Mathew Furneaux', p243+) and Visitation (Gloucestershire, 1569+1623, 'Bassett" (in Appendix I)). | |||||||||||||||
| (A) | Sir John Button or Bitton (dsp) | ||||||||||||||
| (B) | Matthew Button or Bitton (d 1374) | ||||||||||||||
| Berry suggests that Matthew was living 11 Henry V (1423). | |||||||||||||||
| m. Constantia de Kingston (dau of Thomas de Kingston or Kingeston) | |||||||||||||||
| (i) | Sir John Button (d 1382) | ||||||||||||||

| m1. Margery or Margaret de la More (dau of William de la More by Maude de Bitton) | |||||||||||||||
| (a) | Katharine Button | ||||||||||||||
| m. Thomas Rugge | |||||||||||||||
| ((1)) | Jane Rugge (dsp 1485) | ||||||||||||||
| m1. Robert Greyndour or Grendour (d 1447) | |||||||||||||||
| m2. Sir John Barre (d 1483) | |||||||||||||||
| m2. Johanna Hurst (m2. Sir John Deverose) | |||||||||||||||
| (C) | Maud Button or Bitton | ||||||||||||||
| m1. William de la More (d 1341) | |||||||||||||||

| (D) | Elizabeth Button or Bitton | ||||||||||||||
| m. Philpott Hampton | |||||||||||||||
| (E) | Beatrix Button or Bitton | ||||||||||||||
| 'Herald & Genealogist' (vol 4, p437) identifies Beatrix's husband as George Strode, showing them as parents of Henry who m. Elizabeth Brent. CTG, supported by Visitation (Gloucestershire, Basset) and the Strode sources, name him ... | |||||||||||||||
| m. Hugh de Strode (a 1377) | |||||||||||||||

| Ellacombe suggests that Thomas dsp but Berry provides the continuation. | |||||||||||||||
