This page is still being researched. It has NOT yet been launched formally into the Database but is shown here TEMPORARILY (albeit for an uncertain length of time pending further research), partly to record connections that we fear we might otherwise lose sight of and partly in the hope that one or more visitors to the site will contribute information that will enable us to develop our information on the families covered in this page to a standard that would support release of a dedicated page in the Database.

Stephen de Bending or Bendeng of Elvetham, Hampshire (a 1166)
m. Juliana (dau of Piers, sister of Geoffrey)
The Bending site implies but does not (as far as we have seen) actually confirm that Juliana was daughter of the Piers who was ancestor of the Mandeville Earls of Essex. This will be researched further in due course.
1. | William FitzStephen de Bending or Bendeng, Sheriff, Justiciar
The Bending site reports uncertainty as to whether or not William FitzStephen was the same person as William de Bending. VCH mentions Stephen (without commenting on his ancestry) and then Adam, implying (through his succession to Elvetham) but not confirming that Adam was descended from Stephen. VCH does not mention William.

The following comes from CTG (vol IV, 1837, p91+) supported by TCB (vol 2, 'Gurney or Gourney (Mayor of London)', p147) & Visitation (London, 1634, 'Gurney'). The Visitation suggests that Brian was "descended from the Gurneys of Kendall". Accordingly, the Richard below who was Sheriff of London in 1633 (Mayor in 1641) was probably not connected to the Richard Gurney who was Sheriff of London in 1590.
