VCH (Yorkshire North Riding, vol 1, 'Parishes: Wycliffe') mentions a number of early lords of Wycliffe and suggests that the difficulty in connecting the later squires to those early lords, which may have passed by marriage, was because of the Black Death "which made fearful ravages in these parts". Poulson starts with the following Sir William, shown as father of John, but the Visitations start with John.
Sir William Wycliffe of Wycliffe, Yorkshire (a temp Edward II who r. 1307-1327)
m. Frances Bellasis (dau of Sir Robert Bellasis)
We believe it likely that the above Sir William & Frances were ancestors of the following John but probably through a female line. Poulson suggests that John d by 1367 but this appears to be the John mentioned by VCH as lord in 1428 who " may have been John son of John de Ellerton and represent a new dynasty of Wycliffes".
