Families covered: Dethick of Amerstone, Dethicke of Gretham, Dethicke of Poplar
(1) We first released a version of this page as Draft on 05.02.08, using our Harleian Society's versions of Visitation (Durham) and a little input from Wikipedia ("Gilbert Dethick"). Although pedigrees have been shown connecting them to the family on Dethick1, see here, it appears that their ancestry was derived from the following Robert who was (according to Wikipedia) "a Dutchman". Thanks to a contributor (CV, 27.10.13) for drawing to our attention to the fact that Oxord DNB reports that Robert was "of the king's armoury at Greenwich, a German armourer brought to England by Erasmus Kyrkener". A footnote on Dwnn's 'Visitations of Wales' (vol 1, p133, footnote) identifies Robert as "a duche man born, and by occupation a forger of armore, came into England wt. Erasmus Crakeoer, Yeoman Armorer to King Henry 8". (2) MGH shows the father of Sir Gilbert (Garter, m. Alice Peeterson) as son of Robert Dethick "Steward to Edmund de la Pool, Duke of Suffolk", by Agatha Lindekar "born at Acon", and identify that Robert as son of Gilbert Dethick, son of Roger son of Sir William of Dethick Hall. It is perhaps possible that Robert became a steward to the Duke of Suffolk in later life but his claimed ancestral connection to the Dethicks of Dethick Hall appears to have been rejected. |
