'HamiltonHistory' differs from the other sources on the next few generations of this line. Normally we would have identified the differences within notes surrounding the 'main data' but this would have become messy so we have provided a separate section below (in italics) to show what is given by BP1934 (whose data is repeated in BP2003), Anderson & HJHeraldry and give precedence to 'HamiltonHistory' in the following upper section.

3. James Hamilton of Milntoun (d 10.1649, burgess of Glasgow, 5th son)
m. Isobel Corbet (dau of James Corbet of Towcers)
'HamiltonHistory' shows James & Isobel as parents of James (b 1637, a 1666). The following comes from 'AndersonMemoirs' (Supplement, 'Newton', p435+) where the first mentioned is the following James who is said to have acquired Newton (Cambuslang) in 1672 and is "said to have been a cadet" of Silvertonhill. The following is supported by 'HamiltonHistory' (Newton of Cambuslang', p624+) which starts with the following James, and by HJHeraldry (Hamilton, 'Newton', p45) except that (a) HJHeraldry shows the following James as this James and (b) HGJHeraldry shows shows that James m1. Elizabeth Hamilton (mother of Elizabeth & Rebecca) m2. Margaret Montgomery (mother of James, Thomas & unnamed wife of John Baird). The dates suggest that there were indeed (at least) 2 Jameses and it seems very likely that this James was father (or grandfather) of the following James. The only oddity is that HJHeraldry reports that the will of the following James's 2nd wife, Margaret Montgomery, was recorded 17.10.1676. This suggests that either there was an error with one of the dates or that there has been further confusion between the 2 Jameses with Margaret Montgomery possibly being wife of this James. The following is also supported by the section 'Family of Hamilton of Newton' within Commoners (vol 3, 'Gray of Carntyne', p10+) but that does not help with the issue regarding these 2 Jameses and also shows the marriages as shown by HJHeraldry.
  A. James Hamilton of Newton (b 1637?, d 1724, 3rd son?)
