Families covered: Drewe of Kene (Kenn), Drewe of St. Lennards, Drewe of Sharpham
| (1) Vivian (p306) shows the following family's coats of arms as "Ermine, a lion passsant, Gu." That is the same as what he shows for the family shown on Drewe2. It is very likely that they were closely connected albeit probably not in the way suggested by T&G, which is reported below. (2) This page was first prepared on 30.10.08 using Commoners. It was reviewed and significantly amended on 15.03.18 using Vivian, giving precedence to Vivian over Commoners on the basis that his work (published in 1895) would have taken note of but corrected Commoners (published in 1838). The page was reviewed and amended again on 16.11.25 using T&G (published in 1853). It appears that T&G followed the same root sources as Commoners and so should also give precedence to Vivian. However, T&G provides some data that appears to be potentially relevant so we have not discounted it completely. In an attempt to simplify the impact of the contradictions between the sources, we have split this page and now show some of what was previously shown below on page Drewe3. (3) The confusion between the sources appears to derive at least in part from the commonality of the use of the name William, in particular with the following William & Joan having named both their eldest son and their youngest son "William". |

| William Drewe of Sharpham, Devon | |||||||||||||||
| m. Joan Prideaux (dau/heir of John Prideaux of Orcharton (by Agnes/Amy, dau of Robert French of Hornford by Anne/Maud, dau/heir of Robert Wynard of Haccombe), m2. Baldwin Acland) | |||||||||||||||
| 1. | William Drewe of Kene | ||||||||||||||
| Vivian (p306) names the eldest son William but gives no more information about him and follows the line of the younger William, identifying him as "of Kene" and married to Elinor, as shown below. Commoners suggests that it was the younger William who was 'of Kene' and was "ancestor of the Drewes of St. Leonards and the city of Exeter" but does not follow his line. T&G shows the elder William as father (by Ellinora) of John (of Gray's Inn) father by Agnes Yorke of Emmanuel and others. That is what Vivian (p306_ shows for the younger William. T&G shows the younger William (of Sharpham, Drewscliff & Hayes) as father (by Joanna, dau/heir of Matthew Wrosford) of Henry of Dewcliff & Haye father of William of Dewcliff & Haye father of the Thomas (of Dewcliff & Haye, married Eleonora Huckmore, whom we show below) father of Richard father of John (whom we show on Drewe2). | |||||||||||||||
| 2. | John DreweÏ dsp) | ||||||||||||||
| 3. | William Drewe of Sharpham (d 22.06.1548) | ||||||||||||||
| Vivian (p306) suggests that William d 22.06.1548. If that is true then, noting that Vivian also reports that his grandson was "aged 50 years and more at his death, d. 06.12.1574), that would make William quite old for his time albeit not improbably so. | |||||||||||||||
| m. Elinor | |||||||||||||||
| A. | John Drewe (dvp?, of Grays Inn) | ||||||||||||||
| m. Joane Crewis (dau/coheir of _ Crewis of Morcharde) | |||||||||||||||
| i. | John Drewe of St. Lennards, Devon (b by 1498, d 06.12.1574) | ||||||||||||||
| (1) T&G conflates this and the preceding generation, showing John of Gray's Inn (son of William) as married to Agnes, dau of Watkin Yorke. (2) Vivian indicates that the "Original Visitation" started with this John. |
