Main source(s):
(1) "Living in St. Andrews" by Catherine Forrest (published by St. Andrews University Library in 1996, ISBN 0 900897 14 7) provided much of the above. The book's secondary title is "A history of the Carstairs family from the 15th to the end of the 19th century". The book is a MUST HAVE for anyone who is researching either the Carstairs of Fife families or the history of St. Andrews, Fife.
(2) Stirnet's 'BG family records'. In some cases the family records disagree with what is given in "Living in St. Andrews", in particular:
(i) on the ancestry of John Carstairs of Newgrange who died in 1649. As that book specifically refers to and denies part of what the old handwritten (and unreferenced) family records suggest (we think it came from 'East Neuk of Fife' (Walter Wood, p165)), we defer to that book.
(ii) on certain details of the marriages and children of Sir John Carstairs, 1st of Kilconquhar. Here we also defer to the book.
