Families covered: Roberts of Cranbrooke, Roberts of Glassenbury
BEB1841 reports that the following William came into England from Scotland, settled in Goudhurst (Kent), and assumed the name Roberts. He "purchased certain lands in Goodhurst, called Winchet Hill" and "built a mansion, calling it Rookhurst, after his own name". This may explain why the Visitations are not consistent on how they show the family's name with it not being clear whether they were known as Roberts or (de) Rockhurst/Rockherst.
William Rookherst, alias Roberts, of Goodhurst (a 1102)
1. | Robert Rookherst, alias Roberts of Rockhurst

(1) | Roberts Roberts of Cranbrooke
(A) | Stephen Roberts | ||||||||||||||
m. Joane Tilley (dau/heir of William Tilley (Tyllye) of Glassenbury)
The Visitations do not identify Stephen's wife but this is probably the Stephen (a temp Richard II who r. 1377-1399) reported by BEB1841 (which jumps to him from the first William Rockherst) to have married the heiress of Glassenbury, which is the parish of Cranbrooke. [BLG1952 (Nettelbladt-Roberts of Glassenbury Park) names her Joane.] Noting that BEB1841 jumps from this Stephen to the Walter who is shown by the Visitations as his grandson yet describes him (in effect) as his lineal descendant (rather than his grandson), we suspect that the descent to Walter may not be as simple as is made out by the Visitations. Nevertheless, in the absence of good reason to do otherwise, we follow the Visitations in showing Stephen as father of ...

The Visitations show Thomas as son by Alice Naylor. BEB1841 does not attribute any of the children to any of the wives but is clear in showing Margaret Penn as the first wife and identifies Thomas as his heir. We presume that he was Margaret's son.
