Thomas Palmes of Naburn (a 1419)
m. Alice Pickering (dau of John Pickering of Ellerton)
1. | William Palmes of Naburn
(1) Commoners identifies William's 2nd wife as Margaret, dau of John Ingleby of Ripley. Although we initially thought that this may be right, our faith in that was weakened by its report that Margaret was previously married to Lord Talboys but no mention of any such marriage is mentioned in either TCP (Tailboys) or TCP (Kyme). Accordingly, we follow BLG1952's identification of her as Margaret Inglesby. (2) BLG1952 makes no mention of any children by the first marriage but reports that there was issue by the second marriage, naming only William. Commoners shows William, John, Robert & Margaret as children by Ellin and reports that there was no issue by the second marriage. Visitation (Yorkshire, 1563-4, Roclyff) shows Ellen as mother of Bryan, Guy, Anne & Jennet but mentions no other children. We provisionally allocate the children to William's wives as shown below but note that it is not fully certain. |
|||||||||||||||
m1. Ellin Rocliffe (dau of Guy Rocliffe of Cowthorpe, sister of Brian, baron of the Exchequer)
A. | Guy Palmes (2nd son?)
## Following BLG1952 & Commoners, we show the Guy, who was brother of Brian and married Jane Brew and was ancestor of the Palmeses of Lindley, a generation later, below. However, Nichols, used for the continuation page for Guy below, and the Visitations shows this as that Guy.
B. | Anne Palmes | ||||||||||||||
m. _ Lyston | |||||||||||||||
C.+ | other issue - Bryan (dvp?), Jennet
m2. Margaret Inglesby (dau of John Inglesby of Rigby)
E. | William Palmes of Naburn
Visitation refers to earlier sources that exclude this generation and follows that example, noting that (in respect of the undermentioned Brian and Guy being sons of the above William, shown as by Ellen Roclyff, rather than grandsons) "the dates will not allow of an intermediate generation." However, this William is the first mentioned by BLG1886 (which identifies him as 9th in descent from Sir William Palmes (a 1346) and 15th in descent from Manfred Palmes). We follow Commoners and BLG, which mentions him as reported in the 1530 Visitation, in including him.
