Families covered: Bruges (Brugge) of Cubberley (Coberley), Bridges of Shefford, Brydges of Avington, Brydges of Keinsham (Keynsham), Brugge of Solers

BE1883 reports that this family is "supposed to have sprung from the old Counts de Rethel, in the province of Champagne". Collins suggests that it took its name from the castle of Brugge in Shropshire and may have descended from Arnulf de Montgomery, younger son of Roger, Earl of Shrewsbury, which Earl had held Brugge Castle.
Sir Simon de Brugge
1. Sir Simon de Brugge
  m. _ Walwyn
This generation is omitted by various sources, possibly correctly (though we will not redo this page to exclude this generation until we have seen the matter addressed properly). We suspect that there may have been confusion over the generations as there is another Simon (m. _ Walwyn) several generations later, with confusion on their son James.
  A. John de Brugge of Solers, Herefordshire (a 1322)
  m. Sara
i. Sir Baldwin de Brugge of Solers
Baldwin's wife is identified in Visitation (Essex, 1612, Bridges/Bruges) as Alice Kingsmeade but she was probably wife of his son Simon. Several other sources (including Collins) identify her as Isabel (or Elizabeth), dau/coheir of Sir Piers Grandison or Granson, son of William by Sibil, dau/coheir of John, Lord Tregoz. That appears to be Lord Grandison who is reported by TCP (Grandison) to have dsp with no mention of any daughter. We hold back from linking his wife properly to that family and provisionally follow BE1883 in identifying his wife just as ...

James is not mentioned by Collins or Visitation (Essex, 1612, Bridges/Bruges) or Visitation (Worcestershire, 1569, Bridges) but is mentioned by Visitation (Gloucestershire, 1623, Bridges) (alongside John, possibly of this generation) and, clearly as of this generation, by one part of Visitation (Gloucestershire, 1623 Miscellaneous, Bridges) (alongside all of his apparent siblings). We suspect that there has been confusion between the generations. Provisionally we place James some generations later (here).
C.+ other issue - Hugh, Giles, Walter, Eleanor
