We have seen in a web site the suggestion that the family name derived from an ancestor who bore the king's banner. We hope to find out more about the Bannermans of Waterton in due course but note that, by saying that the Bannermans of Elsick "have been confounded" with them, BP1934 appears to suggest that many records have confused the two branches.

  BP1934 reports that in 1608 Margaret married John Gordon, younger of Haddo. TSP (Aberdeen) reports that that John's wife was Margaret, dau of George Bannerman of Waterton, who later married Sir William Keith of Ludquharn.
