This page is still being researched. It has NOT yet been launched formally into the Database but is shown here TEMPORARILY (albeit for an uncertain length of time pending further research), partly to record connections that we fear we might otherwise lose sight of and partly in the hope that one or more visitors to the site will contribute information that will enable us to develop our information on the families covered in this page to a standard that would support release of a dedicated page in the Database.

1. Sir Ralph de Stopham ' of Bryanston' of Stopham (b c1248)
  m. Isabella
  A. Eva de Stopham
m. (before 19.10.1291, sp(s)) Sir William de Echingham
Probably of this generation were ...
2. Robert de Stopham (a 1272)
We speculate that this was the Robert Stopham who is shown by Visitation (Foster, Yorkshire, 1584/5+1612, 'Vavasour of Hazlewood") as ancestor of the following.
  A. Sir William de Stopham
  i. Sir William de Stopham 'of Weston'
  a. daughter
  m. John Vavasour of Askwith (brother & son a c1329)
3. Henry de Stopham
Elwes & Robinson identify Henry as "ancestor of the junior branch of the family represented by the Barttelots". We speculate that he was grandfather of the undermentioned John whose descendants are given by MGH (vol 1, 1868, p106+) and that that John was the brother of Eleanor, identified on CountyGen (Berry, Kent, p478) as wife of Sir Roger Sidney & dau of Sir James & sister of John, which would make Henry father of Sir James.
  A. Sir James Stopham father of Eleanor, of this generation?? (but note the date when Eleanor's husband died)
  i. John Stopham
  a. William Stopham of Stopham
  m. Joane Foord of Foordhouse mother of Joan, presumed also of Isabell

  b. Assoline Stopham
  m. Adam Barttelot of East Preston & Stopham (d 1371-2)
  ii. Eleanor Stopham
  Sir Roger Sidney (bur 1239)
4. Brian de Stopham
Elwes & Robinson suggest that Henry was "named, no doubt, after his uncle, who was living in 1268, and who traced his decent from Brian de Insula".
