The following may or may not have any connection with the above.
James Thomson of Priestfield
m. (mcrt 02.03.1696) Elizabeth Coats (dau of John Coates of Barnhill)
who, noting the intermarriages with the Coats family shown below, is thought likely to have been connected with ...
William Thomson of Hallhill
1. William Thomson of Hallhill (d 18.05.1831)
  m. Helen Coats (d 12.01.1827, dau of James Coats, 2nd of Dykehead)
Balderston reports that they were cousins. Although we can see that there were 2 marriages between the families (William marrying Helen and William's sister Margaret marrying Helen's brother William), the cousin relationship has not yet been found. It is not known whether or not, for example, William's mother was a sister of Helen's mother Agnes, daughter of George Todd of Haghill. Alternatively, the connection may have been more distant.
  A. Agnes Thomson (b 1782)
  m. (29/30.08.1795/6) James Todd of Glenduffhill
  B. Helen Thomson
  m. John Scott of Uddingston
C. Janet Thomson (b 04.06.1789)
  m. (03.03.1809) James Coats of Eastend (b 1782)
  D. Jean Thomson
  m. Andrew Wilson of North Mains of Provan
  E. Mary Thomson (d 10.01.1837)
  m. Thomas Bowman of Hallhill, Old Monckland
  F.+ other issue - Margaret (d 01.1795), Margaret (b 04.01.1801, d 04.01.1812)
2. Margaret Thomson
  m. William Coats of Eastend (d 15.04.1747, d 22.10.1831)

The following Thomsons are shown here because mention has been seen (in a web site) of the fact that Margaret Crum, first wife of Lord Kelvin, was a second cousin of her husband and it is known that her family was based roughly in the same region of Scotland as the above Thomson families. It is noted that Lord Kelvin's mother's mother is reported to have been Elizabeth Pattison. Margaret Crum's mother's mother was Margaret, dau of John Pattison of Kelvingrove. If Elizabeth and Margaret Pattison were sisters then the second cousin relationship would be confirmed. Such would discount the need for any presumption of any other close relationship between the following Thomsons and those reported above.
