(a) The following shows the Polloks of Faside as a cadet of the family of Arthurlie. This suggestion was found in the 'Letters, Queries and Notes' booklet referred to below but would appear to contradict the notice in (b) following which seems to imply that the Polloks of Faside was a long-standing branch in its own right. However, it is possible that there was a long-standing line of Polloks of Faside that died out and Faside passed to the cadet branch below. Alternatively, of course, the connection shown below (between Arthurlie and Faside) may be wrong. One item of concern is that the 'Letters, Queries and Notes' booklet identifies two brothers as Robert Allan of Arthurlie and John Allan of Cunnymore but those 'brothers' were hitherto both known only as Allan: Allan of Arthurlie and Allan of Craigton.
(b) "A Chronicle of the Family of Gairdner" by William Henry Bailey, privately printed in 1947, reports as follows on the Polloks of Faside: "This branch of the family claims to be the eldest male line of the house of Pollok. For several hundred years the property of Faside had passed on from generation to generation without the "affront" of an entail, the eldest son, no doubt, as a rule succeeding, while the younger sons go off to other occupations." The first Pollok reported in that book was the Thomas shown below as alive in 1800. "History of Our Firm", a fascinating book by John Rankin about the history of 'Pollok, Gilmour & Company' and its associated companies (privately printed in Liverpool in 1908), reports that Faside was brought into the family reported below in about 1707. It is not known if that acquistion was a purchase or a 'paid for' inheritance from a cousin.
