Families covered: Hovell (Hovill or Smith) of Ashfield, Hovell of Bury St. Edmunds, Hovell of Hawley, Hovell of Hillington, Hovell or Rishinghall, Hovell of Wyverstone

(1) We show 2 Hovell families on this page, mainly because the information that we have on them is not sufficient to justify 2 different pages but also because we suspect that they were connnected in some way.
(2) For the first family, BP1934 ('Ffolkes') shows the first 3 generations as "Smyth, or Hovell" whilst BP1934 ('Thurlow') describes the heiress of the Ashfield line as "dau. and ultimately heiress of Robert Hovell, alias Smith of Ashfield". However, Smyth/Smith is not mentioned by RHG or Visitation. Debrett reports that the main line of the family called & styled themselves "Hovell alias Smith" from/about the time of Queen Elizabeth (who r. 1558-1603) but gives no reason for it.
