Families covered: Fairlie of Braid, Fairlie of Coodham, Fairlie of Edinburgh
'History of the County of Ayr' (James Paterson, vol 2, 1852, p23), reporting Nisbet, states that "the ancient family of Fairlie of Braid, in the vicinity of Edinburgh, was descended from a natural son of Robert II". However, King Robert II was born in 1316, making it impossible that he was father of the following William who is described by MacGregor as "a custumar and burgess of Edinburgh by 1329" with a son alive in 1335. | |||||||||||||||

It was moved here after review led to acceptance that there was little chance of our making a significant improvement to it in the near future and that it was 'good enough' to be promoted into the main database. (2) Paterson (p73) reports that "The Fairlies, of whom Holmes is a branch, are understood to be descended from the Fairlies of that Ilk, near Largs." |
