BHO (Magna Brittania, vol 6: Devonshire, General history: Baronets) reports that "This ancient family is said to have been of Cornish extraction. Robert de Elford was sheriff of Devonshire in 1302. Before the year 1400, they settled at Longstone, in the parish of Shipstor, where the elder branch remained till 1748, when it became extinct in the male line." The name of the parish, which is on the west site of Dartmoor, has been spelt in various ways in the past but it eventually settled on 'Sheepstor'.
