Langton reports that Baine (in his 'History of Lancashire') speculates that the Bartons of Smithells were "an offshoot of the Bartons of Barton-upon-Irwell. The armorial bearings of the two families being different ought to have led to a contrary inference. The Bartons, who acquired Smithells by marriage with an heiress of Radcliffe, sprang out of Nottinghamshire."
