BIFR1976 reports that "The surname Winthrop is thought to derive either from the village of Winthorpe (formerly Winetrop), Lincs, or from Winthorpe (formerly Wymondthorpe or Wynethorpe), nr Newark, Notts. The name is first found in Yorks towards end of 13th cent, being spelt in a variety of ways."
