McCall started his article on this family with "The Wilkies, we are told, have been seated at Rathobyres, in the county of Edinburgh, ever since the commencement of the 14th century, and until the present day. The surname has been variously spelt and indifferently used by the earlier members of the family - Wilky, Wylke, Wilkyne and even Wilkiesoun." McCall later added: "Rathobyres was .. divided into several portions, each held by different members or branches of the Wilkie family - a circumstance which enhanves the difficulties to be encountered (in preparing the peidgree)" and decided not to start his pedigree of the family any earlier than ....
