Families covered: Whitby of Colwich, Whitby of Cresswell, Whitby of Great Haywood

The following is given at the beginning of the article on this family within BLG1886: "This family, which has been settled in co. Stafford since the reign of Henry VII., derives from the town of Whitby, or Whitebay, in co. Yorkk, and according to local tradition, existed in the north of England at a date anterior to the Conquest."
Thomas Whitby of York (a 1298)
1. William Whitby of York (a 1300)
2. ?? Whitby
BLG1886 mentions William and then moves to the undermentioned William, identifying him as "6th in descent from Thomas". We interpret this as suggesting that the undermentioned William was not descended from the above William.
