?? Thurland
1. Thomas Thurland, 1st of Thurland Hall, Mayor of Nottingham (d 1464, MP)
  A. Thomas Thurland of Thurland Hall (dsp 1472)
There is some confusion over these early generations. Orange reports that this Thomas was succeeded by his cousin Thomas who was succeeded by his nephew Sir Thomas (m. Joan Willoughby) who was son of Richard by Alice Nevill. Visitation (Nottingham) starts with Thomas identifying him as father, by Alice Nevill, of an unnamed son who is shown as probably (connecting by dotted rather than solid line) father of the Thomas who m. Jane Willoughby. Whilst (as noted below) it seems that Visitation was probably better than Orange in getting the later generations correct, we suspect that Orange was probably more correct with these earlier generations. Noting that, after marrying a Thurland, Alice Nevill married Sir Gervase Clifton (who d 1491), we suspect that it was this Thomas who married ...

  (a) Sir Edward Thurland of Reigate (b c1607, d 1662, baron of the Exchequer, judge)
The above-mentioned Visitations end with identifying those of this generation who were alive in 1623. Orange mentions only the 3rd son, Edward (shown by the Visitations as the eldest), reporting that he "eventually became heir to his father's property, and that of the Ellyott's by his wife" (i.e. his father's wife). Orange ends its pedigree on this family with Sir Edward's son & heir, Edward, who was living in Surrey in 1708. Visitation (Surrey, 'Thurland'), which starts with this Edward's parents, shows him as married to ...
