Families covered: Sausmarez of Jerburg, Saumarez (Sausmarez or Salinelles) of Sauzmarez

(1) BP1934 reports as follows: "The family of Sausmarez or Saumarez descends from one of the Norman families settled in the Channel Islands in the 11th and 12th centuries. The name was derived from the Fife de Saumareys, i.e., salt marsh, situated in low-lying land by the sea in Jersey. It has been spelt in many ways amongst which are Samarés, Sausmarais, Sausmaresq, Sausmarez and Saumarez, the last two being in use at the present time. The Latin forms Salinelles and de Salso Marisco were in use in the 12th and 13th centuries. The family disappeared from Jersey in 1333 on forfeiture of its estates in that island."
