Families covered: O'Donnel of Larkfield, O'Donnell of Newport, O'Donnell of Tyrconnel

(1) This family's name is normally spelt with 2xNs & 2xLs (O'Donnell) but is sometimes spelt with a single L (O'Donnel) and sometimes with a single N (O'Donell). We follow the lead of BP1870.
(2) BP1870 reports that "This ancient family claims a royal Milesian descent, and deduces its lineage from the common ancestor of the O'Neills, Earls of Tyrone (originally Kings of Ulster), and the O'Melaghans, Kings of Meath." We intend to show that descent in due course.

A. Calvagh O'Donell, Chief of Tyrconnel (d 26.11.1566)
BP1870 reports that Calvagh dsp 1556 and shows the undermentioned Con as son of his full-brother Hugh. BE1883 reports that Calvagh d 1566 "leaving one son, Con". TCP reports that Calvagh's 2nd wife, Catherine, was not the mother of his eldest son, Con. None of the sources name Calvagh's 1st wife whom we think was ...

  i. Con O'Donnell of Tyrconnel (b by 1540)
(1) BE1883 suggests that Con was (a) Prince of Tyrconnel. TCP indicates that the Chiefdomship passed from his father to his uncle Hugh.
(2) BP1970 identifies his son Sir Neill Garbh as "The youngest, but only surviving son" but BE1883 shows him as first of the 3 sons who left issue - Niall Garv (sic), Hugh Boy & Con Oge and identifies that Hugh Boy as ancestor of the O'Donnells of Larkfield. BP1970 shows that Hugh Boy as son of Sir Niall Garbh. However, we follow BE1883 & various web sites in showing Hugh Boy as brother rather than son of Sir Niall.
