(1) When this page was first preparead we suggested that anyone who is particularly interested in this family should visit valacar.net where some useful information on this family may be found, including part of the 'NisbetPlates' which is one of the Main Sources used for this page. Unfortunately, when we checked that link on 09.12.21 we found that kit no longer worked. We hope to find where that information was moved to in due course.
(2) The family name of Nisbet or Nesbit (spelt with various combinations not only of i & b & ai but also with single/double b & t) is thought to be a local name derived from lands in Berwickshire. The first thought to be a definite ancestor of this family, though it is possible that he has been confused with his father who may have been another Adam, was ...
Adam de Nisbet of Nisbet (a temp David II who r. 1329-1371) succeeded by ...

The above comes from Nisbet's 'A System of Heraldry'. 'NisbetPlates' appears not to support it fully by showing the following Philip as succeeding Adam (a 1480) successor to Philip (a 1442) son of Adam (a 1442, 1467). 'A System of Heraldry' then shows Philip (m. Helen Ruherford) succeeded by Alexander father of George father of Philip (m. dau of Haldane of Gleneagles). The next few generations come from 'Heraldic Plates'.
