4. Alexander Fleming (d c1652)
  TCP (vol XII/2) reports that, after the death of the 7th Earl (## above), the Earldom (and associated Baronies) "probably became extinct", nor has anyone proved a right to the ancient Barony of Fleming .. which also probably became extinct" but then cross-refers to Appendix E therein (which is entitled "The soi-disant Earls of Wigtown") which reports that, on the death of the 7th Earl, the title was "at once asumed" by the undermentioned '8th Earl'. TCP reports that "the Committee for Privileges, resolved, 6 Feb. 1782, that he had no right thereto".
