Families covered: Pyne of Ham, Pyn of Upton Pyne
(1) BLG1952 reports that "The family of PYNE (or Pine ...) was founded in England and in Devonshire by Herbert de Pyn or de Pins, lord of the manor of Upton Pyne in Devonshire about 1154. Herbert de Pyn would appear most probably to have been a scion of the ancient French house of the same name which had been established in Aquitaine about 1120." BLG1952 goes on to note that the family is thought to have originated in Spain with the name having come from "the Barony of Pinos on the southern slopes of Mont Jou in the Pyrenees." (2) BLG1952 reports that the head of the family in Aquitaine in 1154 was Guillaume Raymond de Pins and infers that Herbert may have been in the train of Eleanor of Aquitaine who married King Henry II of England in 1152. |
