(1) VCH reports that hides at Ipsley were "among the estates of Osbern .. son of the Confessor's Norman favourite, Richard Scrob". One of Osbert's chief undertenants was Hugh whose name, according to VCH, was until c1575 "usually spelled Hubaud or Hubawde; then a phoentic rendering Hybot, or Hybbotts, was used ... but about 1640 the family apparently decided to revert to the earlier form, but misread it as Huband, and in that form the name has continued to the present day."
(2) BEB1841 reports that "Descended from Hugh Hubald "who held Ipsley of Osbernus at the Norman invasion" was Hugh Hubald of Ipsley (a temp Henry II who r. 1154-1189). The tenancy and the name may have passed through a daughter (Denise de Bereford) mentioned by VCH. BEB1841 starts with ...

  VCH reports that Ipsley passed to Sir John's "third but eldest surviving son Thomas". BEB1841 suggests that Ipsley passed to his eldest son, Sir John, who was succeeded by a Thomas. We presume to show as follows:
