(1) This upper section was first uploaded to a Temporary page on 07.06.06 where it was amended 05.02.07, again on 06.07.10, again on 15.12.11. It was moved here after review led to acceptance that there was little chance of our making a significant improvement to it in the near future and that it was 'good enough' to be promoted into the main database.
(2) TCB reports that Alexander Hannay or Ahannay, 1st of Kirkdale, was uncle of Patrick Hannay of Sorbie who was ancestor of the 1st Baronet. TCB provides the descent from that Alexander but shows nothing about the ancestry of Sir Robert, 1st Bart, (in fact it says that the 1st Bart's parentage "is unknown") other than to report that he was descended from Patrick, Alexander's nephew. Mention of the Hannays of Sorbie, and the connection to Sir Robert, was kindly provided by a contributor (DA, 04.02.07). HOWEVER, DA shows the father of Sir Robert (b 1507) as Odo A'Hannay (of Sorbie). BLG1952 ('Hannay formerly of Sorbie') starts with a John Hannay of Sorbie (whose 2nd son was William of Grennan) who must be of the generation before Sir Robert. PROVISIONALLY, we show that John as father of Sir Robert then William then Alexander.
(3) As part of the review on 30.08.23, which led to the release of this page into the main part of the Database, we used 'History of the lands and their owners in Galloway' (Paterson, vol 1, 1870). We suspect that, either directly or indirectly, DA (mentioned above) used information provided by pp456+ of that work to produce the information on the Sorbie line that is shown below in italics. Paterson is unsure of much of that pedigree, except to make it clear that Sir Robert, 1st Bart, was indeed a younger brother of John of Kirkdale.
