Betham reports that "This family, the name of which we find variously written, as Gould, Gold, and Goold, is undoubtedly of English origin; and descended from a family of Gould, whose extensive branches were established in the counties of Dorset and Somerset. The precise period of the migration to Ireland of the particular branch which forms the subject of this memoir, has not been ascertained: but it is presumed that the lineal ancestor became resident in the county of Cork, as early as the reigh of Henry VI.; and, from the circumstances that he was soon afterwards entrusted with the chief municipal functions of the city of Cork, we may reasonably infer the respectability of his origin and connections.
