Walsh reports an old Latin document as reporting that this family "has been settledi n Lancashire since the Conquest" and that "Three principal branches of the family settled in different parts of Lancashire", being those of Peel Hall (see middle section below), those of Ramsgrove (see lower section below), and the following branch of Chorley. The family name was spelt variously, with variations (apart from Gillbrand) including Gelebrond, Gelibrond, Gellibrand, Gellybrand, Jellibrand & Jollibrand.
