Representative of the Sieur de Champney, "a younger son of the noble house of de Champnee in Normandy" (according to BEB1841), who may have been the ancestor who "came into England with the Conqueror" (according to Commoners), was ...
Sir Amyan Champneys (a temp Henry II who r. 1154-1189)
1. | Sir Amyan Champneys | ||||||||||||||
BEB1841 identifies Amyan's wife as Anne, dau of Courtenay, Earl of Devon, by his wife, Blanch, dau of Lewis, King of France. That is easily ignored. Berry, supported by Commoners for her father, identifies her as follows, identifying Reginald as "progenitor of the Earls of Devon".

|||||||||||||||
Sir John Champneys - continued above
Commoners reports that the Champneys of Orchardleigh were the senior branch of the family but does not show the connection. BEB1841 jumps from the Sir Hugh who m. Maud Avenell (above) to the undermentioned Sir Henry who married Elizabeth Horrey, identifying him as "7th in lineal descent" from Sir Hugh. Berry shows this Sir John & Elizabeth as parents of John (m. Johanna Aylworth) parents of Thomas "from whom the Somersetshire family are supposed to descend, but they make themselves to branch off one descent higher" + Henry + 'Robert or John' (father of the Lord Mayor). We follow various web sites which support the view that the Somerset family did indeed spring from the next generation rather than the one after, being from the 2nd son (Henry) rather than the eldest (Thomas).
