(1) BE1883 identiifies the arms of the Viscounts as "Az., a chevron, engrailed, between three lions passant-guardant, or". See Smith34.
(2) Visitation inserts an additional generation before the following John, another John (m. Alice), but does so in brackets noting that this was "From Somerset's copy, in later hand". It does so also for the next John's wife, naming her Agnes Branker (sic).

  Thomas is the only one of this generation mentioned by MGH (NS1, vol 3 (1880), p406) where it is indicated that he was "of Leeds Castle", was knighted, and had issue.
  ii. Sir John Smythe of Leeds Castle (b c1592, d 20.05.1632)
  HoP ("John Smythe") identifies John as 2nd but only surviving son of Sir Richard. Leeds Castle was sold by his sisters to Sir Thomas Culpeper.
