Families covered: Polwhele of Polwhele, Polwhele of Treworgan
Commoners reports that "This family claims Saxon origin, and takes its name from the manor of Powhele, (in Domesday Polhel) in the county of Cornwall". Lineally descended from Drogo de Polwheile (a 1140) was ...
John Polewheele or Polwhyll of Polewheele/Polwhyll, Cornwall (d 1441-2)
Visitation starts with this John (a temp Henry VI who r. 1422-1461), naming his wife Elizabeth. Commoners names his wife Alicia. Commoners spells the family name as Polwhyll then Polwhyle then Polwheile before settling on Polwhele. Visitation uses Polewheele throughout though the Harleian editor uses Polwheile for the entry title. BLG1886 uses Polwheile before settling on Polwhele. BLG1952 uses Polewheele before settling on Polwhele. For the sake of simplicity we settle on Polwhele after this John.
1. | John Polwhele of Polwhele (a 1459)
Visitation names him Otes and then inserts another generation by showing (this) Otes as father of another Otes who, by Margery, dau/heir of Walter Killigrewe, was father of Stephen. We follow Commoners in naming the husband of the following Alice as John (rather than Otes) and missing out the additional generation. Although BLG1952 does not name his wife, this John must be the John (a 1459) who is the first given by BLG1952 who is shown as father of Stephen.
