Commoners mentions a report (dated 1723) that "the founder of the MacAuslanes in Scotland, was one Buey Anselan, son of O'Kyan, King of Ulster, who ... passed over to Scotland with a body of followers in or about the year 1016" and that he "married an heiress of the name of Denniestoun, and in her right acquired those lands ... and that his successors were all Lairds of Buchanan". Commoners adds that the line ended "with the last of the lairds, John, who flourished in 1682, leaving an only daughter and heiress". Except for that last laird flourishing in 1682 (we show John, last of Buchanan as having died by 1681), this confirms that the McCauslands are an early branch of the Buchanans.
