p. Grisel Sempill (d 10.1575, dau of Robert Sempill, 3rd Lord, widow of James Hamilton of Stanehouse)
There is some confusion on John's family. Anderson identifies his children as William, David & Jane then shows William as father (by Elizabeth Drummond) of John, William of Lockmuch & the wife of George Haliburton (minister of Perth) then John as m1. Jean Fairney m2. Barbara Elphinsone then John as father of Bishop Peter. 'HJHeraldry' shows John as father of William, John, James & David then John as father of William father (by Elizabeth Drummond) of John & William of Lochmuck then John (m1. Jean Fairney, m2. Barbara Elphingstone) father of Bishop Peter. We follow 'HamiltonHistory'.

TSP reports that Archbishop John is "said to have had a third son by (Grisel), James". 'HJHeraldry' (Hamilton, 'Coats', p34) starts with James, "said to be third son of John, Archbishop of St. Andrews". BP1895 ('Hamilton' (Bart of London)) reports that the Archbishop had 5 sons and then moves on to James of Coats (a 1528), father of Paul of Coats who was succeeded by his nephew, Andrew. However, 'AndersonMemoirs' ('Coats', p264) starts with Paul (uncle of Andrew) who is identified as "The first that has been met with of this family" whilst 'HamiltonHistory' (p153) reports that "It is suggested in one reference that the Archbishop had another son James. ... James is probably however a misreading for David." We now show James elsewhere, as younger brother rather than son of Archbishop John.
